The 27th Annual Conference on the Americas will be in the Miller Learning Center to be held on February 16-17, 2024, and hosted by the University of Georgia.

The Plenary Session will feature Dr. Pilar Chamorro, Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics, on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at 1:30-2:30 p.m., at the Miller Learning Center, room 248.

"Community-based Cherokee Language Translation"

2024 UNESCO Decade of Indigenous Languages Lecture Part 1

Sara Snyder Hopkins, Assistant Professor of Anthropology & Sociology, Director of the Cherokee Language Program at Western Carolina University, and an ethnomusicology PhD, will present her ongoing research. Sara translates historical Cherokee language documents and hymns through collaborative community work with EBCI members. She will discuss her current project - Eastern Cherokee Histories in Translation - her methodology, and the centrality of community-based research for revitalizing indigenous languages like Cherokee. Dr. Snyder has recently received an NEH Grant and support from the John W. Heisse Fund to continue this work.

2024 UNESCO Decade of Indigenous Languages Lecture Part 2

Rainy Brake was the first certified teacher in the EBCI New Kituwah Academy Cherokee Immersion Program, and is currently Cherokee Language Instructor at Western Carolina University's Cherokee Language Revitalization Program. Rainy has a BA in English Literature and a Graduate Certificate in Cherokee Language. Rainy also studies the effects of language immersion pedagogy on language acquisition and culturally sensitive curriculum development, as well as childhood and adult language acquisition, and play-based pedagogy with Total Physical Response methods.

Dr. Pablo Lapegna receives Willson Center Research Fellowship

Dr. Pablo Lapegna, Associate Professor in Sociology and Latin American and Caribbean Studies, has received the Willson Center Research Fellowship at the University of Georgia.

The fellowship "supports excellence in arts and humanities research or creative practice and activity." It will allow Dr. Lapegna to work on his project titled, "Prosperity, Plants, and Pesticides,” during the 2024-2025 academic year.

Kudos to Dr. Lapegna for another outstanding achievement!
