LACSI and EIDAES-UNSAM (Argentina)
advance inter-institutional collaboration
|
On February 25, 2025, sociologist Dr. Ariel Wilkis (School of Interdisciplinary Advanced Social Studies, EIDAES-UNSAM, Argentina) visited LACSI's Casa Amarilla for a metting with Dr. Chad Howe and Dr. Jorge Derpic, the Institute's Interim Director and Assistant Director, respectively.
Dr. Wilkis, also a Dean at EIDAES-UNSAM, visited UGA to present his research on the introduction and appropriation of the U.S. Dollar as a currency in Argentina throughout the 20th Century.
The meeting was an opportunity to follow up on the inter-institutional scholarly collaboration plans between LACSI and EIDAES-UNSAM, spearheaded by Dr. Pablo Lapegna (Sociology and LACSI).
At LACSI, we are very excited about this alliance and the possibilities it will bring to UGA faculty and students with links to and interests in, mainly, Argentina, but also Latin America and the Caribbean at large.
Stay tuned for updates and opportunities about these plans!

Trillium cuneatum
Sweet Betsy
|
Trilliums, emerging through the leaf litter, are often one of the first signs of spring in the garden. With 38 species found across North America—many in the eastern states—they are a cherished part of the landscape. Historically, trilliums have been valued for their sapogenin content, which contributed to a variety of medicinal uses. This is reflected in their common names, such as birthwort and Indian balm, which hint at their traditional applications.

|
A message from the LAEG Curator:
For the remainder of the semester, I will be in the garden on Tuesdays, from 10-2 and Wednesdays 12-4.
Please feel free to swing by and I'll put you to work weeding, shoveling mulch and/or cutting things back...or we can just talk about plants.
If you are interested and can't make it during these times, reach out to me at Nunally.Benzing@uga.edu and we'll see what we can make work.
