Solanum lycopersicum
Tomato (Voyager)
Jitomate
Native to Peru and Ecuador .
They were first domesticated in Mexico before spreading worldwide.
|
This week at the Latin American Ethnobotanical Garden, this remarkable tomato is one of the unique varieties donated to the garden by the van der Knaap Lab at UGA's Center for Applied Genetic Technology. Dr. van der Knaap's lab focuses on the genetics of fruit morphology, exploring how small, thumbnail-sized fruits have evolved into the larger, palm-sized varieties we find in grocery stores today. The featured tomato is a German heirloom, specially bred to grow in clusters that can be enjoyed without the need for a knife.
