LATIN AMERICAN ETHNOBOTANICAL GARDEN NEWS

Banana fruit at the Latin American Ethnobotanical Garden

Banana
Musa basjoo

Contrary to popular belief bananas are not native to Latin America . Evidence suggests they were first cultivated around 8,000–5,000 B.C. in what is now Papua New Guinea. Those bananas were closer to the plantains, sweet bananas didn't come on the scene until a mutant was discovered on a Jamaican plantation in the 1800s.

We grow a cold tolerant banana in the garden that produce a stunted inedible fruit, but provide a good visual for discussions on the influence of banana production in Latin America. Banana crops struggle world wide because they are clonal and lack genetic diversity. They must be sprayed daily with fungicide/herbicide which negatively impacts the land and the workers.
