Cuphea micropetala
Mexican cigar plant / Candy corn
The show is far from over! This late blooming Mexican native is a treasure of the autumn garden. Cuphea plants are widely used in traditional South American and Mexican medicine as anti-inflammatory, diuretic, antipyretic, antimicrobial, astringent, and hypotensive agents. Herbal teas, infusions, or decoctions are the most widespread traditional preparations, and are most often prepared from the aerial parts. In Athens, this plant is used primarily for late season color and its hardy drought-tolerant nature.
