Please join us for a free screening of the documentary film, "Nicaragua, Free Country to Live," featuring a talk by filmmaker and professor of Literature, Dr. Daniel Rodríguez Moya. The film follows the popular resistance movement against Nicaraguan president and de-facto dictator Daniel Ortega. When nationwide protests erupted against the regime led by Ortega and his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo, in 2018, it appeared that the once-popular politician's days were numbered. Having led the popular (Sandinista) revolution that toppled the brutal regime of long-time dictator Anastasio Somoza in 1979, Ortega is a towering figure in Nicaraguan politics. In recent years, however, Ortega's image as a liberator has succumbed to that of a tyrant, as he has resorted to calculated repression and systematic violence to maintain his hold on power. The film documents first-hand accounts of this repression from opposition leaders, many of whom have since been forced into hiding or exile.
