Abstract

Professor Branche explores the role of Father Carlos Miguel de Paniagua, who crafted the life story of the formerly enslaved Chicaba in Compendio de la vida ejemplar de la Venerable Madre Sor Teresa Juliana de Santo Domingo (1752). The talk interrogates the ways that hagiography displaces African identity while presenting a European-Christian vision of triumphant evangelization.
