Meeting ID: 924 6291 8384 Passcode: 375386 Mónica García Blizzard (Emory University) will deliver a talk based on her forthcoming book The White Indians of Mexican Cinema: Racial Masquerade Throughout the Golden Age (SUNY Press, 2022). The book traces the development of a unique form of racial masquerade—the casting of White actors as Indigenous characters—during the Golden Age of Mexican cinema, from the 1930s to the 1950s. This strategy worked to reconcile two divergent discourses about race in postrevolutionary Mexico: the government-sponsored celebration of Indigeneity and mestizaje (the process of interracial and intercultural mixing), on the one hand, and the idealization of Whiteness, on the other.
