Two years after the 1973 CIA-assisted coup overthrew the democratically-elected president of Chile, Kathleen Osberger, a recent graduate and lay volunteer, from the University of Notre Dame, traveled to Santiago, to teach in a Catholic grade school. Upon her arrival she was told a secret: the religious and lay women she would live with sheltered dissidents in the cross-hairs of Pinochet’s secret police. I SURRENDER: A MEMOIR OF CHILE’S DICTATORSHIP, 1975 (Orbis Books, 2023) depicts her harrowing experience, the solidarity of the Chilean people, and the transformational role of nuns and clergy dedicated to serving the poor and persecuted.
