Dr. Anthony Dest Sociology & Anthropology Spelman College Dr. Dest Profile Wednesday, October 16, 2019 - 12:00pm Sanford Hall, Room 309 On October 16th at 12PM, Dr. Anthony Dest, visiting professor from Spelman College presents his work, "Peace Deferred: Violence in the Aftermath of the Colombian Peace Accords". Abstract The 2016 Peace Accords between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) promised to bring an end to more than fifty years of brutal conflict. Yet, more than 300 social movement leaders and over 130 FARC ex-combatants have been killed since the Accords were signed nearly three years ago. In the department of Cauca in southwestern Colombia, the war continues to frustrate community-based struggles for autonomy and self-determination. Based on ten years of research and political advocacy in Colombia, Dr. Dest will present on the ongoing challenges to building peace. Bio Anthony Dest earned his PhD in Latin American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin in 2019. His book manuscript analyzes how rural communities continue to confront racism, violence and dispossession in spite of the landmark 2016 Peace Accords between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). Dr. Dest has received fellowships from the National Science Foundation, Social Science Research Council, Inter-American Foundation, and Fulbright to support his research. He previously worked at the Washington Office on Latin America and is currently on the coordinating committee of the Afro-Colombian Solidarity Network (ACSN). We hope you can join us!
