Summer FLAS Competition, "Subject to CHANGE; stay abreast of announcements." "Anticipated Deadline: March 4th, 2022"

What Is FLAS and What Languages Does It Cover?

Funded by grants from the U.S. Department of Education, Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships provide financial support to students to encourage the study of critical and less commonly taught foreign languages in combination with area studies, international studies or international aspects of professional studies.

At UGA, these less commonly taught languages include Brazilian Portuguese and Quechua, and both of these programs offer a minor program of study. Visit the UGA Bulletin for information on the Portuguese minor and the Quechua minor or click here to learn about the Portuguese Flagship Program, one of only two offered in the United States.

Funding is available to both undergraduate and graduate students in the form of:

  1. academic year fellowships that support tuition and living expenses as well as
  2. summer funding that supports summer immersion and study abroad ventures.

Undergraduate Academic Year FLAS Fellows Receive:

  • Up to $10,000 for tuition and fees to study at the intermediate or advanced level of Portuguese or Quechua at the University of Georgia
  • $5,000 as living stipend
  • Undergraduate students must be at the intermediate (at least 2000 or 2nd year) or advanced level of either Portuguese or Quechua during time of fellowship.

Graduate Academic Year FLAS Fellows Receive:

  • Up to $18,000 for tuition and fees to study at the beginning, intermediate or advanced level of Portuguese or Quechua at the University of Georgia
  • $15,000 as living stipend
  • Graduate students should be at the intermediate level of the proposed language. While graduate students can receive a FLAS at the beginner level, the cases are rare and more of an exception. In these cases, the graduate student must show fluency in another language related to the area of the world.

Summer FLAS Fellows Receive (Undergrad and Grad):

  • Up to $5,000 for tuition and fees to be used with a FLAS-approved summer immersion program
  • $2,500 as living stipend
  • Undergraduate students must be at the intermediate (at least 2000 or 2nd year) or advanced level of the language at time of fellowship.
  • Graduate students should also be at the intermediate level of the proposed language. While graduate students can receive a FLAS at the beginner level, the cases are rare and more of an exception. In these cases, the graduate student must show fluency in another language related to the area of the world.
