Programs and Initiatives

Much of what we do is embodied by LACSI’s Initiatives. These interdisciplinary collaborations serve as incubators for ideas and instruments for educational and social change. As new initiatives are developed in collaboration with LACSI-affiliated faculty, they will be displayed on this page.

PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE & BRAZILIAN STUDIES

The main goal of the Portuguese Initiative is to create a bridge between the cultures of the Portuguese-speaking world and our student population at UGA. To that end, we have hosted guest speakers from Brazil, Portugal, and Mozambique and have organized hands-on cultural events on campus for our students. In addition, the initiative has also had an impact both regionally and nationally in the field of Portuguese studies through the organization of panels in a regional conference in 2019 and the publication of a bilingual poetry collection featuring the work of Brazilian women writers in 2022.

Ambassador Travel Grants

LACSI Ambassador Faculty Travel Grants (Competition to take place Spring Semester 2023)

The Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute with funds from the Title VI Department of
Education National Resource Center will soon be holding a competition for travel grants to be
given to faculty to be used for research, course or student opportunity development, conferences,
library acquisitions, establishing or expanding collaborations, or instruction in Latin America or
the Caribbean.

Upon return from your trip, the recipient will present on the trip (e.g., initial research findings,
opportunities created, interview information) or produce an evaluable product (e.g.,
Memorandum of Understanding, library acquisition, proposed course syllabus, etc.). These funds
can be used for trips to Latin America, the Caribbean, and/or domestic or international
conferences related to Latin America and the Caribbean.
